Luna Char was founded on a deep commitment to sustainability, regenerative agriculture, and soil health. Our journey began with a simple realization: modern farming practices were depleting soil at an unsustainable rate, and existing soil amendments weren’t doing enough to restore balance. We saw an opportunity to create a better solution—one that improves soil, supports farmers, and benefits the environment.

At the heart of Luna Char is Kevin Hoffberg, a dedicated farmer on Vashon Island, Washington. Like many small farmers, Kevin experienced firsthand the challenges of maintaining soil fertility while staying true to sustainable practices. His passion for science-driven, regenerative farming led him to explore innovative solutions, ultimately guiding him to biochar and wood vinegar. He quickly realized their potential to revolutionize soil health and enhance plant resilience.
Together with a team of experts, industry pioneers, and sustainability advocates, Kevin helped establish Luna Char, bringing farmers, researchers, and environmentalists together to advance regenerative biocarbon solutions. Today, Luna Char operates out of Chehalis, Washington, producing some of the purest and most effective biochar and wood vinegar products available—designed for small farms, large agricultural operations, and environmental restoration projects alike.
Sustainability Commitment
We believe that farming should restore the earth, not deplete it. That’s why every bag of Luna Char biochar and every gallon of wood vinegar actively sequesters carbon, helping to offset emissions and regenerate soil health.
Carbon Sequestration
Our biochar locks carbon into the soil for centuries, reducing greenhouse gases.
Soil Health & Regeneration
We focus on improving microbial ecosystems, increasing water retention, and enhancing nutrient absorption.
Sustainable Sourcing
We use responsibly harvested biomass and innovative pyrolysis technology to ensure minimal environmental impact
Supporting Small Farmers
We believe that every grower—whether urban gardener, permaculturist, or commercial farmer—deserves access to the best soil amendments possible.

We Make All Our Own Products
From biochar to wood vinegar, everything we sell is crafted in-house at our facility in Chehalis, Washington.
Biochar Locks Carbon for Centuries
Our biochar doesn’t just help plants grow—it actively sequesters carbon in the soil for hundreds of years. It's one of the few soil amendments that actually helps reverse climate change.
Cleaner Wood Vinegar
Thanks to our proprietary tar filtration system, our wood vinegar is cleaner, more concentrated, and more effective.

Low Ash Means High Quality
Most biochar contains up to 40% ash, which can harm soil microbes and disrupt pH balance. Luna Char biochar has less than 3% ash, making it safer for crops and perfect for microbial-rich soils.
Powered by Karrikins
Our products are rich in karrikins. These compounds naturally enhance seed germination, root development, and plant vigor, giving your crops a boost straight from nature.
From Waste
Our biochar and wood vinegar start with local, sustainably harvested biomass—often waste wood that would otherwise go unused or release carbon into the atmosphere.
Our Proprietary Process
What makes Luna Char different? Purity, precision, and performance. Our proprietary process ensures that every batch of biochar and wood vinegar is optimized for maximum soil benefits and minimal contaminants.

Biochar
Ultra-Low Ash Biochar
Most biochar products contain 5–40% ash, leading to pH imbalances and reduced microbial activity. Luna Char’s biochar has an ultra-low ash content (<3%), meaning:
-
Higher carbon retention for long-term soil improvement
-
No salt toxicity, making it safe for all crops
-
Better microbial colonization, fostering natural soil fertility

Biochar & Wood Vinegar
Enhanced with Karrikins
Karrikins, a newly identified family of plant growth regulators, stimulate seed germination, root development, and plant vigor. Our unique pyrolysis method preserves and enhances karrikin content in both our biochar and wood vinegar, making our products more effective than standard soil amendments.

Tar
Tar Filtration
Many wood vinegar products on the market contain excess tar, reducing their effectiveness. Thanks to our proprietary tar filtration system, Luna Char’s wood vinegar is cleaner, more concentrated, and rich in plant-beneficial organic acids. This ensures:
-
Superior microbial stimulation in soil
-
Efficient foliar application without clogging sprayers
-
Better compost activation for faster decomposition
