Luna Char was founded on a deep commitment to sustainability, regenerative agriculture, and soil health. Our journey began with a simple realization: modern farming practices were depleting soil at an unsustainable rate, and existing soil amendments weren’t doing enough to restore balance. We saw an opportunity to create a better solution—one that improves soil, supports farmers, and benefits the environment.

At the heart of Luna Char is Kevin Hoffberg, a dedicated farmer on Vashon Island, Washington. Like many small farmers, Kevin experienced firsthand the challenges of maintaining soil fertility while staying true to sustainable practices. His passion for science-driven, regenerative farming led him to explore innovative solutions, ultimately guiding him to biochar and wood vinegar. He quickly realized their potential to revolutionize soil health and enhance plant resilience.

Together with a team of experts, industry pioneers, and sustainability advocates, Kevin helped establish Luna Char, bringing farmers, researchers, and environmentalists together to advance regenerative biocarbon solutions. Today, Luna Char operates out of Chehalis, Washington, producing some of the purest and most effective biochar and wood vinegar products available—designed for small farms, large agricultural operations, and environmental restoration projects alike.

Ultra-Low Ash Biochar

Most biochar products contain 5–40% ash, leading to pH imbalances and reduced microbial activity. Luna Char’s biochar has an ultra-low ash content (<3%), meaning:

Enhanced with Karrikins

Karrikins, a newly identified family of plant growth regulators, stimulate seed germination, root development, and plant vigor. Our unique pyrolysis method preserves and enhances karrikin content in both our biochar and wood vinegar, making our products more effective than standard soil amendments.
